What to Expect During a Spinal Decompression Treatment

If you’ve never had spinal decompression therapy, it might sound a bit intimidating. For some, it might even sound scary and make them not want to try it. We want to ease your mind, though, so you don’t miss out on this incredible treatment and pain management method. To do so, our team at Chiropractic Wellness Center in Kansas City has put together a quick explanation of what to expect during the treatment.

What Is Spinal Decompression?

Before diving into what to expect, let’s talk about what this chiropractic care technique is and how it helps. Spinal decompression is a great technique used by chiropractors for pain management, pain prevention, and general wellness. It is a method through which the spine is stretched, helping chiropractors address misalignment, herniated discs, nerve compression, and more.

What Happens During Treatment?

Spinal decompression takes place on a specialized, segmented table. The top of the table remains still, but the bottom segment moves as needed. This table also has a computer that our chiropractors control.

When you go in for treatment, you will have a harness attached to you – typically around the hips. You will then lie on the table and the harness will be attached to the lower segment of the table. The chiropractor then turns on the computer, which causes the lower segment to move slowly back and forth. This movement stretches your spine to address issues within the spinal column.

Many people wonder if the treatment is painful, but it is not. Patients generally feel relaxed – some even fall asleep. If at any time you feel any pain or discomfort, let our chiropractors know. This is not normal and a change of technique might be required.
